Safety At Home
When we think of our home, it is usually the place that we feel the most familiar and feel the most comfortable, but sometimes, home is where we can be the most careless about our safety. We are going to look at some very simple safety tips below that are important to our personal safety:
1. Make sure you lock all doors and windows even when you are at home and at all times. There are times when we are doing other activities at home and become distracted and can’t hear when someone that we do not know may come around our home. If we leave doors and windows unlocked or open, that can give a thief or attacker time to enter our home. Be aware of who is around your home. Alarm systems and pets are very helpful in keeping intruders away.
2. Keep valuables in a safe, locked place or storage area. Always remember to keep your valuable items hidden from the view of others who may come to your home for repair work or deliveries or for other reasons. It is safer to keep these items hidden, because we may not know the person very well or we may not know what their motives concerning our valuables may be. It is better to be safe than sorry.
3. Make sure smoke detectors are working properly. It is always a good idea to test your smoke detectors and make sure they are operating properly. Make sure to check the batteries and change the batteries at least once a year. Having smoke detectors have changed the lives of countless people.
4. Keep your car key fob or a panic alarm button close by your bed at night while you sleep. Having a car key fob or panic alarm could startle a would be intruder who may have entered your home and could save your life from an attack. This could surprise the intruder and alert neighbors and family members that something is wrong. It could also be used for a health emergency that would alert others that you may need help quickly.
5. It is always good to have a weather radio in your home and a large stock of batteries on hand. In case of a weather related emergency such as a tornado, hurricane or earthquake, it is important to have a weather radio on hand that can keep you updated on emergency weather situations. This will come in handy when there is a power outage and you can not operate your phone or television. It is also helpful to have a portable lantern or flashlights on hand for lighting your home in case of a power outage.
Safety While Traveling
When traveling away from home, whether around town or a long vacation, we need to be aware of our surroundings. While we can’t prepare for everything that may happen to us as we travel, there are some things that we can do to enhance our overall safety when we travel. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind while traveling.
Deluxe Car Kit |
Car Safety
Always make sure your car is well maintained before traveling. It is always a good idea to keep your vehicle in good running condition before starting out on any trip short or long. Have a mechanic check the vehicle out to make sure it is in good running condition and that the tires are in good shape for travel. It is essential to have a safety kit for your vehicle that includes jumper cables, a tire gauge, a first aid kit, water and snacks and a blanket in case of an emergency or breakdown.
Airplane Travel Safety
When traveling on an airplane make sure you always arrive at the airport early. It is so important for your safety to arrive at the airport at least an hour before your flight, because this will give you enough time to check in and check any baggage that you are carrying on the flight. Do not leave any of your baggage left unattended, because someone could take your luggage or put something illegal in your bags. When on the aircraft, make sure you follow all the safety procedures and report any suspicious activity to airline employees.
Domestic Travel Safety
When traveling to another city or state that you are unfamiliar with, please make sure that you are aware of your surroundings while walking or driving at all times. It is also a great idea to have a map of the city or state you are traveling to and a phone with a GPS. These are very helpful tools in finding places that you need to visit whether you are traveling for business or pleasure. Always try to keep purses, billfolds, phones, cameras, jewelry and other valuables locked in a hotel safe or in a safe locked area away from unsuspecting thieves.
International Travel Safety
While traveling internationally, it is best to research the place you are traveling to and learn the customs and some language before arriving there. It is also best if you are vaccinated against any diseases based on the country you are traveling to before you arrive. I can not stress enough about safety when traveling internationally. Always, Always keep your passport close to you in a fanny pack or in a purse close to the front of your body. I suggest buying an international data plan so that you can stay in touch with family or friends in your country if emergencies were to arise. You can also choose to purchase insurance for international travel if needed. It is also wise to find out what the currency exchange rate is before you arrive so that you are aware of the difference from your country to the country you will be traveling to.
